7 Best AthenaHQ Alternatives for 2026 (Cheaper Picks)

Seven AthenaHQ alternatives for 2026 whose entry plans all cost less than AthenaHQ's $295 Starter, for teams that want more answers per dollar, an API included, a published check frequency or Claude and Grok on a flat price. Prices checked 28 and 29 September 2026.

Disclosure: VisibilityOS is published by the team that builds Cituna, one of the tools discussed here. Read this as our view, not a neutral review. Cituna is on this list because we build it; the entries are ordered by the rule stated under "How this list works".

The best cheaper AthenaHQ alternatives in 2026 are Rankscale for every engine on a credit budget from $20 a month, Cituna for seven engines checked daily with Search Console from $39, and Trakkr for Claude and Grok on a flat $100 plan. For an API included rather than sold as an add-on, look at Rankshift ($92) or SE Ranking ($129), and for hands-on help, xseek ($249.99). Every entry plan here costs less than AthenaHQ's $295 Starter (all checked 28 or 29 September 2026).

AthenaHQ's Starter covers 11 models, but usage is counted in credits, one per AI response, and the API is a paid add-on with no published price (checked 28 September 2026).

How this list works: every entry plan had to cost less than AthenaHQ's $295 Starter and answer at least one of its published gaps: credits shared across engines and prompts, an API sold as an add-on, an unpublished check frequency, or the price itself. Entries are ordered by entry price, month to month, low to high, in the US dollar figure each vendor shows. Every rival fact comes from the vendor's own pages, read on 28 or 29 September 2026. Cituna is included because we build it; judge its entry by the same criteria.

Why do people look for AthenaHQ alternatives?

The reasons below come from AthenaHQ's own plans page, read on 28 September 2026.

  • The price. Starter costs $295 a month. The annual toggle says 17% off, but the annual dollar figure loads with JavaScript and could not be read.
  • Credits, not prompts. Starter includes 3,600 credits a month, and one credit buys one AI response. Every engine you switch on draws from the same budget as every prompt you add.
  • The API costs extra. The plans page says "API access and extra credits are optional add-ons billed on top", and the add-on price is not published. MCP is not mentioned.
  • No published check frequency. Neither the plans page nor the homepage says how often answers are checked.

To see what credits mean in practice, take a hypothetical team that tracks 10 prompts on all 11 models once a day. That is 10 x 11 x 30, or 3,300 credits a month: almost the whole Starter allowance for just 10 prompts. Most teams need more prompts than that, which is why how to choose prompts to track matters before you pick any tool.

What does AthenaHQ still do well?

AthenaHQ's Starter lists 11 models: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral. No cheaper entry on this page covers all 11 at once.

It also acts on what it tracks. Starter includes a content optimization agent, on-page and off-page GEO and SEO actions, and a smart robots.txt and llms.txt. AthenaHQ lists GA4 and Search Console integration to tie AI visibility to site traffic, though the plan that includes it could not be read. Enterprise, for enterprises and agencies, adds its Citation Engine and Recommendation Engine.

And there is a free way in. The Essential tier includes 300 credits on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot, with unlimited members, content recommendations and the Athena AI agent. In our scans on 28 September 2026, the seven engines named AthenaHQ in 38 of 153 answers (25%) to 22 buyer questions about AI visibility tools.

What are the best cheaper AthenaHQ alternatives?

1. Rankscale (best for the most answers per dollar)

Rankscale's Essentials plan costs $20 a month, Pro $99 and the agency Growth plan $385 (checked 28 September 2026). Its pricing page makes every engine available on every plan, naming ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral, Grok and Copilot among 17 or more.

Rankscale uses credits too, but weights them by engine. A run costs 0.25 credits on ChatGPT, AI Mode, Perplexity or Gemini, 1 on DeepSeek and 2 on Claude. Pro's 1,200 credits therefore buy up to 4,800 answers a month on the cheaper engines, against the 3,600 responses in AthenaHQ's $295 Starter. You set the cadence, from hourly to monthly. MCP is on every plan, the REST API starts on Growth, and the homepage lists Search Console and GA4 connections in beta. The 7-day trial covers Pro only.

Strength: more answers for a third of AthenaHQ's price, if most of your prompts run on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers.

Limit: Claude costs eight times as much per run as ChatGPT, the per-run cost for AI Overviews, Grok and Copilot is not shown, and it has no content writer.

Pick it if: you like AthenaHQ's engine list but can live with credits weighted by engine.

2. Cituna (best for seven engines daily with Search Console)

Cituna costs $39, $119 or $399 a month (checked 29 September 2026), so its entry plan is $256 a month less than AthenaHQ's Starter. From $39 it checks seven engines daily, a cadence AthenaHQ does not publish: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, with Google Search Console connected.

Like AthenaHQ, it acts on what it finds: Cituna writes the fix for each gap and publishes articles. An MCP server is included, where AthenaHQ sells its API as an add-on and does not mention MCP. The trial lasts 3 days and needs a card.

Strength: the seven engines most buyers ask, Claude and Grok included, at a published daily cadence, for $39.

Limit: Copilot, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral are on AthenaHQ's list and not among Cituna's seven engines. Its $399 top plan costs more than AthenaHQ's Starter, and there is no free tier to match AthenaHQ's Essential.

Pick it if: you use AthenaHQ mainly for the big seven engines and Search Console. Our AI visibility tools compared note shows it next to the rest.

3. Knowatoa (best for AI articles published to your CMS)

Knowatoa's Starter costs $59 a month and tracks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode (checked 29 September 2026). Growth, at $199, covers seven services: those three plus Claude, Gemini, Meta AI and Perplexity. Grok and Copilot are not listed. Annual pricing is available, but the figures are not published.

The content side is its answer to AthenaHQ's content agent. AI agents and recommendations are on every plan, along with AI article generation that publishes to your CMS and drafts for LinkedIn and Bluesky. Growth adds the API, MCP, Looker Studio and NinjaCat. Unlimited sites share one question limit, but the number of questions per plan is not published. The 7-day trial goes through a checkout.

Strength: AthenaHQ-style content actions for $59, and Growth at $199 still costs $96 less than AthenaHQ with the API included.

Limit: the question allowance is not published, and Starter has no Perplexity, Gemini or Claude.

Pick it if: publishing content matters more to you than tracking every engine.

4. Rankshift (best for API and MCP with unlimited seats)

Rankshift's Starter costs €77 a month, shown as $92, or €69 billed annually (checked 28 September 2026). Every plan tracks all the engines in its calculator: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Mistral, Perplexity, Meta AI, Microsoft Copilot and Claude. Grok is not listed. Refresh is daily or weekly.

MCP and API access are on every plan, Starter included, which is the direct answer to AthenaHQ's API add-on. Projects and seats are unlimited on every plan, and each plan includes a content brief generator and an AI content writer. Starter includes 150 prompts a day and 9,500 credits a month. Most engines cost 2 credits a run and Copilot and Claude cost 5, so 150 daily prompts on one 2-credit engine use about 9,000 credits. The 30-day free trial needs no card. Search Console is not published.

Strength: API and MCP from the first plan, unlimited seats and the longest trial on this page.

Limit: credits again, with Claude at 5 a run, no Grok, and no Search Console on its pages.

Pick it if: you want AI visibility data in your own stack and many people using it.

5. Trakkr (best for Claude and Grok on a flat price)

Trakkr's Growth plan costs $100 a month, or $1,000 a year (checked 28 September 2026). Every plan includes eight models: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Grok, DeepSeek and Meta AI. Google AI Mode and Copilot are not listed.

It is priced by prompt, not by credit. Growth tracks 1 brand daily with 50 prompts and 12,000 data points a month, which is 50 prompts on all 8 models every day, against AthenaHQ's 3,600 responses for $295. It also includes 25 articles a month, 3 seats and MCP. The REST API and white-label client portals come with Scale at $500. Trakkr has no native Search Console connector, only a workflow guide that uses GSC exports. The 14-day trial requires a card.

Strength: Claude and Grok on every prompt, every day, with no credit maths.

Limit: no AI Mode or Copilot, a card for the trial, and the API only at $500.

Pick it if: your buyers ask Claude and Grok, and you want a flat monthly bill.

6. SE Ranking (best for Search Console, GA4 and API in an SEO suite)

SE Ranking's Core plan costs $129 a month, or $103.20 billed annually (checked 28 September 2026). It includes 100 AI prompts checked daily across 5 LLMs, 2,000 keywords, 10 projects, 25,000 API credits, MCP access, and Data Studio, GA4 and Search Console integrations. Growth, at $279, raises that to 250 prompts and 100,000 API credits, still under AthenaHQ's Starter.

The plan card does not name the 5 LLMs. SE Visible, SE Ranking's standalone AI product, names ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and says Claude will be added soon. The 14-day trial needs no card and includes 20 AI prompts a day. Agencies can add the Agency Pack for $69 a month, billed annually, with white label and 30 client seats.

Strength: API, MCP, Search Console and GA4 all on the entry plan, where AthenaHQ sells the API separately.

Limit: five engines, with no Claude, Grok or Copilot named, and you pay for a full SEO suite along with the AI tracking.

Pick it if: you want AI visibility next to rank tracking and keyword research, with the data wired into Search Console. See how to use Google Search Console for AI search.

7. xseek (best for eight engines with a dedicated specialist)

xseek's Starter costs $249.99 a month, billed monthly (checked 28 September 2026). It tracks eight engines: ChatGPT, Grok, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek and Copilot. Google AI Mode is not listed.

Starter covers 50 prompts on 1 website, 10 opportunities, unlimited users, strategic onboarding and a dedicated account specialist. xseek connects Search Console and Google Analytics, and a REST API with 38 endpoints and an MCP server exist, though the plans that include them are not published. Check frequency and trial terms are not published either: the pricing FAQ offers a 30-minute call with a strategist instead. Agencies pay a $250 platform base plus $100 a month per added site.

Strength: 8 of AthenaHQ's 11 engines, plus a human specialist, for $45 a month less.

Limit: no AI Mode, only 50 prompts, and no published cadence or trial.

Pick it if: you want AthenaHQ's breadth with someone to guide the work, at a budget near $250.

What do AI engines recommend instead of AthenaHQ?

In our scans on 28 September 2026, we asked seven engines "AthenaHQ alternative" and all seven answered. Profound was named by all seven, Peec AI, Otterly.AI and Scrunch by five each, and Rankability by four.

The engines' default answers are not the cheaper picks. Profound, the most named, has no published brand price, and Scrunch's Core costs $250 for four engines. Claude, Grok and Google AI Overviews all quoted Profound at about $99 a month, a brand plan Profound no longer shows (see Profound alternatives).

Some engines did point to cheaper tools. ChatGPT named Cituna at about $39 a month, second among the alternatives it listed, and no other engine named it. Grok named Knowatoa at $59 and Claude named Rankscale. AthenaHQ's own price came back as $295 from Google AI Overviews, which matches the page, since AthenaHQ publishes one readable entry price, as our crawler test of nine pricing pages found.

How do you switch from AthenaHQ?

  1. Export your topics and prompts. Note which of the 11 models you actually use and how many credits you spend in a typical month, so you can size the new plan.
  2. Check your billing term. If you took the annual 17% discount, time the switch to your renewal date.
  3. Drop to the free Essential tier, not straight to nothing. Its 300 credits on five engines keep a light baseline running while you test the new tool.
  4. Run both in parallel for two weeks. Load the same prompts and compare results on the engines both tools track. Engines answer differently from run to run, so judge whether both show the same competitors rising or falling.
  5. Move integrations and content last. Reconnect Search Console and GA4, point any scripts at the new API or MCP, and decide where the work of AthenaHQ's content agent goes next.
