How to Get Cited by ChatGPT: 7 Steps [2026 Guide]

To get cited by ChatGPT, let OAI-SearchBot in, stay in Bing's index, answer each buying question and get onto the roundups it reads. To measure it daily, our pick is Cituna at $39. Seven steps from OpenAI's docs and our scans.

To get cited by ChatGPT, let OpenAI's search crawler reach your pages, keep them in the search indexes ChatGPT draws on, then publish direct answers to your buyers' questions on your own site and get listed in the roundups ChatGPT already reads. OpenAI says sites that block its OAI-SearchBot crawler are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and in our scans ChatGPT's most-cited sources were vendors' own sites and "best tools" roundups.

The seven steps below follow from OpenAI's own documentation, read again on 29 September 2026, and from what ChatGPT cited in our scans.

How does ChatGPT find sources?

ChatGPT does not search the web for every prompt. OpenAI's help center says it may search automatically when a question would benefit from current information, and people can also start a search themselves.

When it does search, ChatGPT typically rewrites the question into one or more targeted queries and sends them to third-party search providers. OpenAI's own example turns a long question about cancer drug research into a short keyword query that ends with a year. This is a form of query fan-out.

Which providers? The consumer help article does not name one. It links Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy statements for how providers handle queries. OpenAI's help article for Enterprise and Edu is more direct: ChatGPT may share disassociated search queries with the Bing search engine to return web results. OpenAI publishes no share of results per provider.

Two personal signals can change the query. ChatGPT may use an approximate location based on the user's IP address and, when memory is on, relevant saved memories. On ranking, OpenAI says only that ChatGPT weighs several factors and that placement is not guaranteed.

Crawling is a separate matter from searching. OpenAI runs three web agents that matter here, and they do different jobs.

OpenAI's three web agents and what a robots.txt block does, per OpenAI's crawler documentation
AgentWhat OpenAI uses it forWhat a robots.txt block does
OAI-SearchBotSurfacing websites in ChatGPT's search featuresYour pages are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links
GPTBotCrawling content that may be used to train OpenAI's foundation modelsSignals that your content should not be used for training; it does not remove you from search
ChatGPT-UserVisiting a page while answering a user's requestRobots.txt rules may not apply, and OpenAI says this agent does not decide what appears in search

On 29 September 2026 the same page also listed a fourth agent, OAI-AdsBot, which only visits landing pages submitted as ChatGPT ads. It has no bearing on citations.

What did ChatGPT cite in our scans?

Our scans cover the questions Cituna tracks about AI visibility software: 33 scans in the 30 days to 22 September 2026 (how we count). ChatGPT gave 552 answers containing 2,598 citations to third-party sites, about 4.7 per answer. Claude averaged 7.9 and Perplexity 20.2. Only Grok (4.5) and Gemini (3.5) cited fewer.

All five of ChatGPT's most-cited sites belong to companies that sell AI visibility tracking: otterly.ai (123 citations), ahrefs.com (117), promptwatch.com (107), peec.ai (84) and tryprofound.com (74).

Set aside the vendors Cituna tracks as competitors and the engines' own pages, and look at the 100 third-party sites ChatGPT cited most. Roundups, meaning "best X tools" and "X alternatives" lists, took 79% of their 562 citations, the highest share among the seven engines. Articles took 19%. Reddit drew three citations, and YouTube and LinkedIn none.

The page type followed the question. For "best Perplexity rank tracker", ChatGPT drew on roundups. For "which AI visibility tool includes Google Search Console", it went to vendors' own product and documentation pages. The full breakdown is in what ChatGPT cites when it recommends AI visibility tools.

What do AI engines advise when you ask them?

On 28 September 2026 we asked all seven engines Cituna scans "how to get cited by ChatGPT". All seven answered. Their advice overlapped on four points:

  • Technical access first. ChatGPT, Grok and Gemini said to allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. ChatGPT and Grok added that GPTBot can be blocked separately without losing citations. Grok, AI Mode and Perplexity said ranking in Bing matters.
  • Answer first. Six engines recommended a short, self-contained answer of about 40 to 60 words directly under a question-style heading.
  • Original data. Research, benchmarks and statistics with attribution.
  • Third-party mentions. Reddit, Quora, YouTube, review sites, trade press and "best of" roundups. Reddit was the most-cited host on this question, by four of the seven engines.

One answer got the crawler backwards. Google AI Mode named GPTBot as the crawler to allow. OpenAI's documentation says the opposite: OAI-SearchBot decides search visibility, and GPTBot only governs training. A site that followed AI Mode's advice could allow GPTBot, keep blocking OAI-SearchBot, and stay out of ChatGPT search.

That is the lesson of the exercise. Several engines also quoted precise percentages we could not trace to a primary source. ChatGPT's own answer cited only OpenAI's pages. Check any AI-generated advice against OpenAI's documentation before you change robots.txt.

Step 1: Let OAI-SearchBot reach every page

Open robots.txt on every host and subdomain you care about, and confirm OAI-SearchBot is not disallowed. OpenAI's help center says inclusion needs two things: allowing OAI-SearchBot to crawl, and letting requests from OpenAI's published IP ranges through your host or CDN. The list is at openai.com/searchbot.json.

Ask whoever runs your firewall to allow those ranges, then wait. OpenAI says a robots.txt update can take about 24 hours to reach its search systems. The rule syntax is in how to set up robots.txt for AI crawlers, and what an AI crawler is covers the wider set of bots.

Step 2: Decide on GPTBot and noindex separately

OpenAI treats its settings as independent, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot and disallow GPTBot. Blocking GPTBot keeps your content out of potential training and nothing more.

Blocking OAI-SearchBot does not fully hide a page either. OpenAI's publishers FAQ says a disallowed URL found through a third-party search provider may still show as just a link and title. To stop that, use a noindex meta tag, and leave the crawler allowed so it can read the tag. The FAQ frames this around ChatGPT Atlas, which OpenAI's help center says was scheduled to stop working on 9 August 2026, so treat the Atlas wording as legacy and the noindex advice as current.

Step 3: Keep your pages in Bing's index

Since ChatGPT rewrites questions and sends them to search providers, a page no provider has indexed is hard for ChatGPT to find. OpenAI names Bing only for Enterprise and Edu, but it links Microsoft's privacy statement for consumer search too.

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit a sitemap and fix any pages Bing reports as excluded. What IndexNow is explains how to tell Bing about new and changed pages quickly. The same work helps with Microsoft Copilot.

Step 4: Write one page for each buying question

ChatGPT's most-cited sites in our scans were vendors' own domains, and for a feature question it went straight to product and documentation pages. A clear page for each buying question, on your own domain, is a realistic way in.

List the questions you want to win: comparisons, alternatives, integrations and pricing. Answer each one in the first paragraph, naming the product, the category and the specific feature. With fewer than five third-party citations per answer, the page that most directly answers the rewritten query takes the slot. The format is covered in how to write a comparison page AI engines cite and how to structure a page for AI answers.

Step 5: Put the facts in the HTML and date the page

Keep the facts that matter, such as prices, supported tools and limits, in the page's HTML text rather than behind scripts or images. A crawler test of nine pricing pages shows what goes missing when they are not, and server-side rendering and AI crawlers explains the fix.

Show a visible "last updated" date and refresh it when facts change. Several engines in our 28 September scan also recommended Organization, Article and Product schema. Schema markup for AI search covers what it can and cannot do. Retailers have one more route: since 24 March 2026, OpenAI has used merchant product feeds for product discovery in ChatGPT.

Step 6: Get onto the roundups ChatGPT already cites

Four in five citations to ChatGPT's other top sites went to lists. If publishers rank tools or services in your category, being on their lists is worth more than another post of your own.

Run each of your buying questions in ChatGPT, open its sources and note which roundups it cites. Then ask those authors to include you, with a reason that fits their list. How to get your product into "best tools" roundups has the pitch. Community threads mattered less for ChatGPT in our category than for Perplexity and Google's engines, as Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn in AI answers shows, so check your own questions before moving effort.

Step 7: Measure citations and ChatGPT visits

OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links. Add a segment for it in analytics before you change anything else, so you can see what moves. Tracking AI referral traffic in GA4 shows the setup.

For citations, fix a set of prompts, run them on a schedule with memory off, and log which of your pages ChatGPT cites. Answers vary a lot: SparkToro's study of 2,961 runs, published 27 January 2026, put the chance of ChatGPT giving the same list twice at under 1 in 100. Count how often you appear across many runs rather than your position in one. How to choose the prompts to track and how to measure AI share of voice cover the method. A citation is not a mention: ChatGPT can cite your page and name a rival, and improving ChatGPT brand mentions covers getting the name.

Which tools do this?

You can do Step 7 by hand. A tool saves the repeat runs and keeps the history. Each fact below was read on the vendor's own pages on the date shown.

  • Cituna checks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode daily, and costs $39, $119 or $399 a month (checked 29 September 2026). It writes the fix for each gap it finds and publishes articles. For each answer it records the pages ChatGPT cited and whether it named you. It does not track Microsoft Copilot, and its trial is 3 days with a card required. Cituna's own guide to getting cited by ChatGPT is a second read on the same steps.
  • Otterly.AI Lite costs $29 a month for 15 prompts checked daily, with ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot on every plan (checked 28 September 2026). Where it beats Cituna: a lower price, and Copilot is included. Gemini, AI Mode and Claude are paid add-ons.
  • Peec AI Starter costs $95 a month for 50 prompts run daily on 3 models you choose, ChatGPT among them (checked 29 September 2026). Claude and Grok are Enterprise-only.
  • Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit costs $99 a month per domain billed annually for 25 prompts, with prompt tracking on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode (checked 28 September 2026). It has no free trial.

By need:

  • ChatGPT citations and mentions logged daily, next to six other engines and Search Console: Cituna, from $39.
  • ChatGPT with Microsoft Copilot at the lowest price: Otterly.AI, $29.
  • Three models you choose, ChatGPT among them, with 50 prompts: Peec AI, $95.
  • ChatGPT and AI Mode inside Semrush: Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, $99 a month per domain, billed annually.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?

OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to reach its search systems. Beyond that it publishes no timeline, and it says placement is not guaranteed, so re-run your prompts monthly and watch the trend.

What tool tracks whether ChatGPT cites my site?

For ChatGPT checked every day next to six other engines, Cituna: it records which of your pages each answer cited and whether it named you, from $39 a month (checked 29 September 2026). Otterly.AI's $29 Lite tracks ChatGPT with Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot, and you can also log a fixed prompt set by hand each month.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing my site?

No. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler, and OpenAI says blocking it does not remove you from search. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that decides whether your pages can appear in ChatGPT search answers.

Is ChatGPT search powered by Bing?

OpenAI's consumer help says ChatGPT uses third-party search providers and links Microsoft's privacy statement. Its Enterprise and Edu help names Bing directly. OpenAI does not say what share of results comes from Bing.

Can you pay to be cited by ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT on 9 February 2026 and says "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you." Ads are labelled as sponsored, and OpenAI said on 23 September 2026 they were live in more than 60 countries.

Does ChatGPT cite the same sources every time?

No. SparkToro's January 2026 study found under a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT gives the same list of brands twice for the same prompt. Track how often you appear across many runs, not one answer.

How do I see traffic that ChatGPT sends to my site?

OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links. Filter or segment on that source in your analytics tool to count visits and conversions from ChatGPT.
