Being named in ChatGPT's answer is different from being cited as its source. To improve your brand mentions in ChatGPT, make the pages it reads for each buying question name you for a stated need: open your own page with a scoped verdict, and get onto the third-party lists it reads. In our scans on 29 September 2026, ChatGPT named Cituna on the two alternatives questions where the other pages it read included a page naming Cituna (Profound) or were only the rival's own site (AthenaHQ), and not where they were rival vendors' lists. To measure that gap, our pick is Cituna when you want ChatGPT and six other engines checked daily from $39 a month, since it keeps each answer's text, the brands named, your position and the pages cited for every prompt. Otterly.AI Lite checks ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews and Copilot daily on 15 prompts for $29 (checked 28 September 2026). Then fix the pages ChatGPT reads, on your site and off it.
What is the difference between being named and being cited?
Named means your brand appears in the text of ChatGPT's answer, usually as a pick with a reason. Cited means one of your pages appears as a source link. The two come apart: your comparison page can be the source ChatGPT uses to describe your rivals, and someone else's roundup can get you named with no link to you. How to get cited by ChatGPT covers the source link; this guide covers the name.
What did ChatGPT name in our scans?
Cituna tracks 22 buyer questions about AI visibility tools on seven engines and keeps each answer. On 29 September 2026, Cituna was named on 6 of the 22, all six times by ChatGPT. Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode named it on none.
| Question | Pages ChatGPT read | Cituna named? |
|---|---|---|
| "best Profound alternative" | Cituna's Profound comparison and three pages on other domains, at least one naming Cituna | Yes, sixth of seven, as the pick for "monitoring + automated execution" |
| "AthenaHQ alternative" | AthenaHQ's page and Cituna's | Yes, third |
| Scrunch, Otterly and Perplexity tracker alternatives | Rival vendors' lists, plus Cituna's own page in about half the runs | No |
On 27 September 2026, ChatGPT cited cituna.com on 11 tracked questions and named Cituna on 3. On the other 8, it used Cituna's comparison pages as sources for the rivals they listed. The pages whose product was named opened with a scoped verdict ("X is the best Y for Z") and picks by need; the pages used only as sources opened with rival prices.
Asked "improving ChatGPT brand mentions" on 29 September 2026, ChatGPT named no brand and cited no page. Its advice was generic: entity clarity, third-party mentions, structured answers, consistent facts, reviews, crawlability and measurement.
This shows what went together, not what caused it: one brand, 22 questions, two days. Answers also vary by run: SparkToro's study of 2,961 runs, published 27 January 2026, put the chance of ChatGPT giving the same list of brands twice at under 1 in 100. The steps below test the pattern, in order.
Step 1: Measure named and cited separately, per prompt
List the buying questions you want ChatGPT to answer with your name: alternatives to each rival, "best X for Y" questions, integrations and pricing. For each answer, record whether you were named, your position, which of your pages were cited and which third-party pages ChatGPT read. Then sort the prompts into named, cited but not named, and neither. Start with the middle group: ChatGPT already reads your page there.
Run each prompt several times with memory off, and count how often you are named, not your place in one answer. Cituna does this daily on seven engines, and lists the third-party pages engines read for your questions and whether your brand is on them. For the engine's side of the choice, see Cituna's guide to how ChatGPT chooses brands.
Step 2: Let OAI-SearchBot in and stay in Bing's index
ChatGPT cannot name you from a page it cannot reach. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to reach its search systems. Allow OAI-SearchBot on every host, and let OpenAI's published IP ranges through your CDN. GPTBot is the training crawler: blocking it keeps you out of training, not out of search.
When ChatGPT searches, OpenAI says it rewrites the question into queries for third-party search providers. Its Enterprise and Edu help names Bing, and its consumer help links Microsoft's privacy statement. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit a sitemap and fix the pages Bing excludes.
Step 3: Open the page ChatGPT reads with a scoped verdict that names you
For each cited-but-not-named prompt, open the page of yours that ChatGPT cited. In our scans, ChatGPT's label for Cituna on the Profound question was a need, "monitoring + automated execution", not a rank.
Rewrite the first paragraph as "X is the best Y for Z", with your product, category and need, then the facts that make it true: price, coverage, the feature. Give the other picks by need after it, rivals included, and move price tables lower. Keep the scope true for every product on the page: if a cheaper rival covers the same, "cheapest" is wrong. How to write a comparison page AI engines cite has the format.
Step 4: Get named on the other pages ChatGPT reads
ChatGPT reads more than your page. For "best Profound alternative", at least one of the three pages on other domains it read named Cituna, and ChatGPT named Cituna. Where the third-party pages were only rival vendors' lists, it did not, even when it also read Cituna's own page.
For each prompt, list the third-party pages ChatGPT read. Separate the ones you can get onto, such as publishers' roundups and directories, from rival vendors' lists, and pitch the first group with the need you fit and a fact they can check. How to get your product into "best tools" roundups has the pitch, and what ChatGPT cites shows the kinds of pages it reads in this category.
Step 5: Keep price and product facts identical everywhere
List every page that states your price, plans or limits, yours and other people's. Pick one source of truth, update the pages you control on the same day, and send corrections for the rest. Keep the facts in the page's HTML text, with a visible "last updated" date. Pages that disagree give ChatGPT conflicting facts to repeat, and consistent facts were on ChatGPT's own list of advice.
Step 6: Re-measure at two and four weeks, engine by engine
OpenAI gives a timeline only for robots.txt changes and says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed. Re-run the same prompts, with the same settings, two weeks after your changes and again at four. Compare named and cited per prompt and per engine, not a blended score: on 29 September 2026 every question that named Cituna did so on ChatGPT alone, which a seven-engine average would have hidden. When a page moves from cited to named, give the next page the same opening.
Which fix should you start with?
- You do not know which prompts name you: for named versus cited per prompt on ChatGPT and six more engines daily, Cituna, from $39 a month (checked 29 September 2026).
- ChatGPT never cites or names you: OAI-SearchBot and Bing (Step 2).
- ChatGPT cites your page but names rivals: a scoped verdict at the top (Step 3).
- ChatGPT reads lists you are not on: pitch their authors (Step 4).
- Your price differs from page to page: one source of truth (Step 5).
- Four engines on 15 prompts are enough: Otterly.AI Lite, $29 a month (checked 28 September 2026).
Frequently asked questions
Why does ChatGPT cite my page but not name my brand?
It can use your page as a source for the rivals it lists. On 27 September 2026, ChatGPT cited cituna.com on 11 questions and named Cituna on 3, and the pages whose product it named opened with a scoped verdict.
How do I track whether ChatGPT mentions my brand?
Run a fixed set of buyer prompts repeatedly and record, per prompt, whether you were named, your position and which pages were cited. Cituna is the best fit for this on ChatGPT plus six more engines daily from $39 a month; for a few prompts, a spreadsheet works.
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from naming my brand?
Not in search answers. OpenAI says GPTBot is its training crawler and blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search; OAI-SearchBot decides whether your pages can be shown.
How long does it take to improve ChatGPT brand mentions?
OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to reach its search systems and gives no other timeline. Re-measure at two and four weeks.
What to do first
- Pick 10 to 20 buyer prompts and record named, position and cited for each on ChatGPT, over several runs.
- Confirm OAI-SearchBot is allowed and your site is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Rewrite the opening of each page ChatGPT cites without naming you, and list the third-party pages it read.
- Pitch the lists you can get onto, align your facts, and re-measure at two and four weeks.
