Query fan-out is a technique in which an AI search system turns one question into several related searches, runs them at the same time across subtopics and data sources, and combines the results into a single answer. Google used the term when it announced AI Mode in March 2025, and says both AI Mode and AI Overviews may use the technique.
How query fan-out works
Google's descriptions, from the first AI Mode announcement to its current guide for site owners, agree on the steps:
- The model breaks the question into subtopics and generates related queries.
- It runs those searches concurrently, across several data sources.
- It brings the results together into one response, with links to supporting pages.
In May 2025 Google announced Deep Search, which uses the same technique at larger scale, issuing hundreds of searches to build a fully cited report.
Other engines describe similar behavior under other names. OpenAI says that when ChatGPT search uses outside search providers, it typically rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries, and may send more specific follow-up queries after reviewing the first results. Perplexity says its Deep Research performs dozens of searches automatically.
Why query fan-out matters for GEO and SEO
Because the answer draws on several searches, the pages that support it do not all have to match the words the user typed. Google says its models find more supporting pages while a response is generated, letting it show a wider and more diverse set of links than a classic web search. A page can earn a place by answering one sub-question well.
Two practical points follow:
- You cannot see the fan-out queries. Search Console's Generative AI performance report splits impressions by page, country, device and date, and its help page lists no query dimension. See how to use Google Search Console for AI search.
- You do not need a page per sub-question. Google's guide says there is no need to break content into tiny pieces, because its systems understand pages that cover several topics. How to structure a page for AI answers covers layout.
An example: a lawn full of weeds
Google's guide gives this case. Someone asks how to fix a lawn that is full of weeds. The fan-out queries might cover the best herbicides for lawns, removing weeds without chemicals, and preventing weeds from coming back. A page that only explains prevention could still support the answer to the original question.
OpenAI's help center gives a parallel case: a researcher's question about cancer drugs that target CCR8 first becomes a search on CCR8 immunotherapy drug development, and after reviewing those results ChatGPT may send narrower queries to other providers.
Common misconceptions
- "Fan-out is only a Google thing." OpenAI and Perplexity describe multi-search behavior too, without using the name.
- "You should split content into many small pages." Google says chunking is not required.
- "Fan-out queries show up in Search Console." The Generative AI performance report has no query dimension.
- "Ranking for the head term is all that counts." Supporting links can come from the sub-searches as well. How to appear in Google AI Mode applies this to AI Mode.
