Google AI Mode is a conversational search mode inside Google Search that answers a question with an AI-generated response and links to supporting web pages, and lets the user go deeper with follow-up questions. Google calls it its most powerful AI search experience and says it suits questions that need further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons.

How AI Mode works

AI Mode uses query fan-out: it divides a question into subtopics, searches for each at the same time across several data sources, then combines the results into one response. When its confidence in a response is not high enough, it may show a set of web links instead.

Google's milestones for it:

  • 5 March 2025: announced as an early experiment in Search Labs, offered first to Google One AI Premium subscribers.
  • 20 May 2025: began rolling out to everyone in the U.S. Google also announced Deep Search, which uses the same technique at larger scale, issuing hundreds of searches to build a fully cited report.
  • 19 May 2026: Google said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users and made Gemini 3.5 Flash its default model for everyone globally.

How AI Mode differs from AI Overviews

AI Overviews appear inside ordinary search results. AI Mode is a separate search mode where the user can keep asking follow-up questions. Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so their responses and links will vary.

They share the rules for site owners. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be a supporting link in either, with no extra requirements. Both are covered by Search Console's Search generative AI control and by its Generative AI performance report, which counts impressions by page, country, device and date. How to appear in Google AI Mode covers the steps.

Both engines put YouTube first and Reddit in their top three, but beyond those two sites their top-five lists had nothing in common. That fits Google's statement that the two show different links. How we ran the scans explains the method, and what Google AI Overviews and AI Mode cite goes deeper.

Common misconceptions

  • "AI Mode needs its own optimization." Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Mode, and that existing SEO fundamentals remain worthwhile.
  • "Appearing in AI Overviews means appearing in AI Mode." Google says their links vary, and our scans show different top sites.
  • "AI Mode cannot be measured." Search Console's Generative AI performance report counts AI Mode impressions, though its help page lists no clicks or queries. How to use Google Search Console for AI search shows where to find it.
