To use social media to get cited by AI engines, post on the platform that the engine your buyers use already reads, in the format it cites, and check each month whether those posts turn up in its answers. In our scans, Google AI Overviews leaned hardest on YouTube, Google AI Mode on YouTube and Reddit, Perplexity on Reddit and LinkedIn articles, and Gemini on Reddit. ChatGPT, Claude and Grok barely cited any of the three and drew on vendors' own pages and roundups instead. So the social side of generative engine optimization is a choice of platform per engine, not a campaign on every network.
This note rests on two reads of Cituna scans of seven engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. The first covers questions about AI visibility tools, 33 scans in the 30 days to 22 September 2026, and its full counts are in Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn in AI answers. The second, new here, covers 16 questions about social media scheduling tools: 929 answers in the 30 days to 22 October 2026. The two reads agree that AI Overviews leans on YouTube, and that AI Mode and Gemini cite Reddit.
The last step needs a tool that records sources engine by engine, and our seven criteria for choosing an AI visibility tool cover what to check before you pay for one.
Which social sites each engine cited
The first read gives the engine-by-engine picture across Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn. The second adds a category that is about social media itself, and shows which of these sites the engines cited when the buyer's question was about posting to them.
| Engine | What it cited of Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn (AI visibility tool questions unless noted) | Post here first |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | YouTube most, then Reddit and LinkedIn | A YouTube video that answers the question |
| Google AI Mode | YouTube and Reddit, with Reddit well ahead of YouTube on the scheduling questions | A Reddit reply, then a video |
| Perplexity | Reddit and LinkedIn articles, never YouTube; no Reddit at all on the scheduling questions | A Reddit reply and a LinkedIn article, if your category's answers cite them |
| Gemini | Reddit, and YouTube only once | A Reddit reply |
| Claude | LinkedIn only, 10 times (plus business.quora.com and medium.com) | Your own pages; an article at most |
| Grok | Reddit only, 5 times | Your own pages and the roundups |
| ChatGPT | Reddit only, 3 times; GitHub on the scheduling questions | Your own pages and the roundups |
Google's two AI surfaces are where social posts pay most. On the AI visibility tool questions, Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn took 15.8% of AI Mode's third-party citations and 13.7% of AI Overviews'. YouTube was the most-cited site of any kind in both: AI Overviews cited it 371 times, Reddit 123 and LinkedIn 71, and AI Mode cited YouTube 159 times and Reddit 94. On the scheduling questions, 135 of YouTube's 167 citations came from AI Overviews and 26 from AI Mode, while AI Mode cited Reddit 70 times and AI Overviews cited it 42 times. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond those of Search itself, so a video or a thread gets there the way any page in Search does. What Google AI Overviews and AI Mode cite covers both engines in full.
Gemini is a Google product, but it did not cite like Google's Search features. It cited YouTube once in 552 answers on the first read, and Reddit 55 times. On the scheduling questions it cited Reddit 40 times. For Gemini, Reddit is the social site worth the effort.
Perplexity reads Reddit and LinkedIn, but check your own category. On the AI visibility tool questions it cited Reddit 300 times and LinkedIn 113 times, and YouTube never. On the scheduling questions it did not cite Reddit once, while AI Mode cited it 70 times. One category's pattern is a starting point, not a rule.
ChatGPT, Claude and Grok barely read social sites. Together they cited the three sites 18 times in 1,656 answers on the first read. ChatGPT's most-cited sources were vendors' own sites and "best tools" roundups, and how to get cited by ChatGPT has the steps for those. Claude cited LinkedIn 10 times, business.quora.com 13 times and medium.com 20 times, and neither Reddit nor YouTube.
| Site | Citations, all seven engines | By engine |
|---|---|---|
| github.com | 191 | ChatGPT 73, AI Mode 30, Perplexity 26, Claude 23, AI Overviews 22, Gemini 15, Grok 2 |
| youtube.com | 167 | AI Overviews 135, AI Mode 26, Grok 4, Perplexity 1, Gemini 1 |
| reddit.com | 154 | AI Mode 70, AI Overviews 42, Gemini 40, ChatGPT 2 |
| n8n.io | 115 | AI Mode 23, AI Overviews 22, Perplexity 20, Grok 19, ChatGPT 18, Claude 13 |
| facebook.com | 21 | AI Overviews 16, Perplexity 3, AI Mode 2 |
Two things in that table are worth a second look. Facebook, one of the networks these tools exist to post to, drew 21 citations across seven engines, the fewest of the five. And ChatGPT's 73 GitHub citations were 38% of GitHub's total: on these software questions, ChatGPT cited github.com more often than any of the social sites we read. How big a platform is in your marketing plan says little about its weight in AI answers.
Step 1: Pick the platform for the engine your buyers use
Start from the engine, not the network. Find out which assistants your buyers use for research, then run five to ten of your buying questions in each of those engines, open the sources and note which social sites appear.
- Videos in the sources of AI Overviews: YouTube comes first.
- Threads in the sources of AI Mode, Gemini or Perplexity: Reddit.
- Articles at linkedin.com/pulse in the sources of Perplexity or the Google engines: LinkedIn.
- Few or no social sites, which is what we saw in ChatGPT, Claude and Grok: social posting is a weak lever for citations there, and the effort belongs on your own pages and the roundups (Step 3).
Pick one or two platforms and do them well, rather than the same clip on every network.
Step 2: Post the kind of page engines cite
A YouTube video that answers one question
The YouTube pages in the Google engines' samples were video watch pages. They were cited for questions such as "best AI visibility tracking tool", "what is the difference between AEO and SEO" and "how much do AI visibility tools cost": buying questions and definitions.
Make each video answer one of those questions, and give the watch page the words a reader sees without pressing play. Use the question as the title and put the answer in the first lines of the description. Add chapters: YouTube builds them from timestamps in the description, and it needs at least three, in ascending order, with the first at 00:00. Check the captions, so the spoken answer also exists as text.
A Reddit reply that answers the thread
The Reddit threads in the samples were mostly tool lists, tool comparisons and how-to posts, many in subreddits named for the topic. One r/DigitalMarketing thread about getting cited in ChatGPT appeared in the samples of Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews.
So find the threads where your buyers ask the questions you can answer, and answer there: the direct answer first, then the evidence, then who you are. Reddit's help center says promotional content is not spam in itself. It defines spam as repeated or unsolicited actions, automated or manual, that harm users or communities, and lists mass-posting the same content among its examples. Each subreddit's moderators add rules of their own, so read them before you post.
A LinkedIn article, not a short post
Almost all the LinkedIn pages in the samples were articles at linkedin.com/pulse addresses: tool lists, a pricing piece, a list of APIs and an article on structuring content to be cited by ChatGPT. That last one appeared in the samples of all four engines that cited LinkedIn.
Write the answer as an article. LinkedIn's help center says every member can publish one, though not from the mobile app. Its SEO settings let you set a title and description that replace the article's own title and opening lines on search results pages, and it cuts SEO titles longer than 60 characters, so write a short one that names the question.
Step 3: Put the same answer on your own site
Social posts reach only some engines, and they live on hosts you do not control. Publish the full answer on your own page first, then make each post a version of it, with a link back where the platform's rules allow.
That page is what ChatGPT, Claude and Grok can cite, since they barely cited Reddit, YouTube or LinkedIn on the AI visibility tool questions. Even on the scheduling questions, a software vendor's own domain, n8n.io, drew 115 citations against 21 for facebook.com. How to write content that AI engines cite covers the page itself.
Step 4: Keep the cadence with scheduled, automated posting
Our counts are by site, not by post, so they cannot say whether posting more often earns more citations. They do tie each site to questions: each site in our data lists up to three of the tracked questions it was cited for. Plan by question rather than by day: a video, an article and a few thread replies for each buying question, refreshed when the answer changes.
Automation keeps that plan running in a busy month. What to automate:
- Publishing. A scheduler with an API or an MCP server can queue the video and the LinkedIn post at set times. With an MCP server, an AI assistant can turn your page into a draft for each platform and queue them for a person to approve.
- The log. Write every published URL into one list, with the question it answers, so that Step 5 can match cited addresses to your posts.
- The reminder. A weekly check for new threads that ask your questions.
What not to automate: Reddit replies. Reddit's spam definition covers repeated or unsolicited posting whether a person or a script does it. Automation does not make a post citable either; answering the question does.
Step 5: Measure whether a post reaches an answer
Fix a set of buying questions, run them in the engines from Step 1 on a schedule, and record every source each answer cites. How to choose the prompts to track covers the question set. Then filter the sources for youtube.com, reddit.com and linkedin.com, match them against your log, and watch the trend over several weeks rather than one run, because answers vary by account, location and time.
Track visits as well. A cited thread or video sends readers to the platform first, so the link from the post to your page is what turns a citation into a visit, and your analytics can segment referrals from each platform.
Method and limits
How we measured this: two reads of Cituna scans of seven AI engines. The first covers the questions Cituna tracks for itself, about AI visibility tools: 33 scans in the 30 days to 22 September 2026, which produced 552 answers each from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Grok, 523 from AI Overviews and 248 from AI Mode. A citation is one source URL shown in one answer, grouped by site. The second covers 16 questions about social media scheduling tools, 929 answers from the same seven engines in the 30 days to 22 October 2026 (133 from each engine, 131 from AI Overviews), read by site for the five sites in the table, with the engine counts shown there. Apart from Cituna, whose own questions make up the first read, we name no brand tracked in either category. The platform rules come from Google's, YouTube's, Reddit's and LinkedIn's help pages, found with one web search each on 22 October 2026. We did not post anything or try any scheduling tool for this note.
What the counts cannot show. They count citations by site, so they cannot tell one thread or video from another, or say why an engine chose it. They cover two software categories, and a consumer or local category may differ. The steps are our reading of the counts, not a measured effect of posting.
Frequently asked questions
Does posting on LinkedIn help AI visibility?
For some engines. On the AI visibility tool questions, Perplexity cited LinkedIn 113 times, AI Overviews 71, AI Mode 34 and Claude 10, and ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok never did in the window. Almost all the sampled pages were LinkedIn articles, so publish the answer as an article rather than a short post.
Is Reddit good for AI visibility?
It was the only one of the three sites that six engines cited on the AI visibility tool questions, led by Perplexity with 300 citations. On the scheduling questions, AI Mode cited it 70 times and Gemini 40, of 154 in all. Aim for a reply that answers the thread's question within the subreddit's rules, because Reddit treats repeated or unsolicited posting as spam.
Does YouTube get cited in Google AI Overviews?
Yes, often. YouTube was the site AI Overviews cited most on the AI visibility tool questions, 371 times or 9.0% of its third-party citations, and AI Overviews accounted for 135 of YouTube's 167 citations on the scheduling questions. Outside Google's two Search features, no other engine cited it more than once in the first read.
Can I automate social media posting to get cited by AI?
You can automate the schedule: a scheduler with an API or an MCP server can queue videos, articles and posts and keep a log of what went live. Keep Reddit replies manual, since Reddit counts repeated or unsolicited posting as spam whether it is automated or not. Automation keeps the cadence; the answer in the post is what gets cited.
How do I know if AI engines cite my social posts?
Run a fixed set of buying questions in the engines your buyers use, record the sources of each answer, and look for your own videos, threads and articles among them. To have that run every day in seven engines, Cituna is our pick: it keeps per-engine citation counts for each site the answers cite, from $49 a month. Our seven criteria for choosing an AI visibility tool help you compare it with other tools.
