AI visibility is how often, and how prominently, a brand or website appears in answers from AI engines, either named in the answer text (a mention) or linked as a source (a citation). It is measured per engine and per question, because each engine answers the same question differently and leans on different sites.
How AI visibility is measured
There are two ways to see it.
From the platform. Google Search Console has a Generative AI performance report. It counts impressions, meaning the times links to your site were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and splits them by page, country, device and date. Its help page lists no clicks or queries. Google says the report reached all websites worldwide by 31 August 2026, although a property with too few impressions in these features may not see it. How to use Google Search Console for AI search walks through it.
From the outside. The other method works for any engine: run a fixed set of questions on a schedule, save every answer and count mentions and citations. That is prompt tracking, and it gives rates such as the share of answers that cite you.
One run is not a measurement, because engines give different answers to the same question. In a 2026 study, Ronald Sielinski sampled Perplexity, OpenAI's SearchGPT and Google Gemini repeatedly and found that many apparent differences between domains fell within the measurement's noise. Julius Schulte, Malte Bleeker and Philipp Kaufmann (2026) make the same case: treat visibility as a distribution, not a single observation.
Why AI visibility matters
It is the first question in any AI visibility audit: which engines name you, and for which questions. Share of voice, referral traffic and fixes all start from that map.
The audience is large. In 2026, Google said AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion monthly active users.
An example: one site, seven different pictures
In our scans (how we measured), youtube.com was the most-cited site in both of Google's AI engines: 371 citations in AI Overviews and 159 in AI Mode, about 9 percent of each engine's third-party citations. Gemini cited it once. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Grok did not cite it at all.
A brand whose presence in this category ran through YouTube would look highly visible on two engines, nearly invisible on a third and absent from four. Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn in AI answers compares all three platforms engine by engine.
Common misconceptions
- "Mentions and citations are the same." A brand can be named without a link, and a page can be cited without its owner being named, so our methodology counts them separately.
- "One score covers every engine." The YouTube numbers above show how far engines can diverge.
- "A tool can see inside the engine." Google's guide says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Tracking tools, including the one this publication's team builds, observe answers from the outside.
- "A single check tells you where you stand." The two 2026 studies above both argue for repeated measurement.
