How to appear in Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews link to indexed pages that can show a snippet, chosen by Google's core ranking systems. What Google documents, what AI Overviews cited in our scans, and the Search Console settings and content work that follow.

To appear in Google AI Overviews, a page has to be indexed, eligible to show a snippet, and good enough for Google's core ranking systems to retrieve it, and your site must not be excluded in Search Console's generative AI setting. Beyond that, Google says no special markup or files are needed, and in our scans the site AI Overviews cited most was YouTube, a source the chat engines barely used.

How do AI Overviews find sources?

Google says AI Overviews are built on its core Search ranking and quality systems. They use retrieval-augmented generation, which Google also calls grounding: its ranking systems pull relevant, current pages from the Search index, and the answer is written from what those pages say, with links to the pages that support it. AI Overviews may also use query fan-out, running several related searches across subtopics before answering. What is query fan-out? explains the mechanism.

AI Overviews do not appear on every search. Google shows them only when its systems judge they add something to the classic results, so they often do not trigger. On mobile, a searcher can tap "Show more" under an AI Overview and continue in AI Mode with follow-up questions, which is covered in how to appear in Google AI Mode.

Three things decide eligibility, all documented by Google:

  • The page is indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet.
  • Googlebot can crawl it, through robots.txt and through any CDN or hosting layer.
  • The site is included in Search Console's Search generative AI control. Inclusion is the default, and the control reached all sites worldwide on 31 August 2026.

Google is just as clear about what is not required: no llms.txt or other AI text files, no special schema.org markup, and no splitting of content into small chunks. What is llms.txt? covers why that file exists anyway.

The controls that affect AI Overviews, per Google's documentation
ControlWhat it does to AI Overviews
Search generative AI control (Search Console)Excluding your site removes its links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover, generally within a few days
nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippetLimit what text Google can show from a page, including in AI features
noindexRemoves the page from Google Search entirely, including AI features
Google-Extended (robots.txt)Governs Gemini training and grounding in Gemini Apps; Google says it does not affect inclusion in Google Search

The last row is worth reading twice. Blocking Google-Extended does not keep you out of AI Overviews, and allowing it does not get you in.

What did AI Overviews cite in our scans?

Our scans cover the questions Cituna tracks about AI visibility software: 33 scans in the 30 days to 22 September 2026 (how we count). AI Overviews gave 523 answers containing 4,117 citations to third-party sites, about 7.9 per answer.

The five most-cited sites were youtube.com (371 citations), google.com (263), reddit.com (123), llmpulse.ai (94) and aiclicks.io (93). The last two sell AI visibility tools, according to their homepages. No chat engine in our scans had YouTube in its top five.

Set aside the vendors Cituna tracks as competitors and the engines' own pages, and look at the 100 third-party sites AI Overviews cited most:

  • Roundups took 51% of their 1,729 citations, well below ChatGPT's 79%.
  • Video took 21%, all of it YouTube.
  • Community sites took 13%: Reddit (123), LinkedIn (71), business.quora.com (21) and Instagram (13), plus a few citations of dev.to.
  • Articles took 13%, and review sites 1%.

The questions show the pattern. For "what is the difference between AEO and SEO", the sites AI Overviews cited included YouTube, Reddit, digitalmarketinginstitute.com and an Instagram reel. For "how to get cited by ChatGPT", they included a Reddit thread in r/DigitalMarketing, Quora's business site and searchengineland.com. For product questions such as "best AI visibility tracking tool", roundups on zapier.com and alhena.ai sat alongside YouTube. What Google AI Overviews and AI Mode cite has the full lists.

What does that mean for your site?

Classic SEO is the entry ticket. Because AI Overviews retrieve through Google's core ranking systems, a page that cannot rank or show a snippet for the underlying searches has little chance of being linked. There is no AI Overviews switch to flip beyond the Search Console control.

Video is a first-class source here. YouTube drew more AI Overviews citations than any other site in our data. A clear video that names your product and category, with a descriptive title, is worth more here than on any chat engine in our scans, since they barely cited YouTube at all.

Communities and personal posts count. Reddit, LinkedIn, Quora and even Instagram appeared. Useful, openly affiliated participation where your buyers ask questions can feed Google's answers directly.

Snippet controls cut both ways. A strict max-snippet or a stray data-nosnippet on your key content limits what AI Overviews can show from you. Use them on purpose, not by accident.

Skip the hacks. Google calls out llms.txt, chunking, rewriting pages just for AI and chasing inauthentic mentions as things you can ignore for Google Search.

How do you get into AI Overviews, step by step?

  1. In Search Console, open Settings, then Search generative AI, and confirm your site is included. Check child properties too, since they inherit from their parent unless someone changed them.
  2. Run URL Inspection on your most important pages and confirm they are indexed and that nothing blocks snippets.
  3. Confirm robots.txt and your CDN let Googlebot crawl those pages.
  4. List the searches where an AI Overview appears for your buyer questions, and record which pages and videos it links.
  5. For each search, improve the one page on your site that should be the answer: specific, first-hand and hard to find elsewhere, which is what Google's guide calls non-commodity content. How to write content that AI engines cite goes further.
  6. Publish a short YouTube video for your top two or three questions, with the product and category named in the title.
  7. Answer the Reddit and LinkedIn discussions that AI Overviews cite, under your own name and with your affiliation stated.
  8. Do not build a separate page for every related phrasing. Google says doing that mainly to manipulate AI responses breaks its scaled content abuse policy.
  9. Watch the Generative AI performance report in Search Console, which shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. How to use Google Search Console for AI search shows how to read it.

What to do first

  • Confirm the Search generative AI control is set to include, for every property you own.
  • Check your key pages for noindex, nosnippet and max-snippet settings you did not intend.
  • Open the Generative AI performance report and note which pages already earn impressions.
  • Pick one question where AI Overviews cite a YouTube video, and make a better one.
